She drummed her fingers on the chipped kitchen counter, the staccato rhythm a counterpoint to the ticking clock. Across the table, the eviction notice sat like a silent accusation. Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating the dust motes that pirouetted in the air, seemingly with more purpose than she did. "Well, this is just great," she muttered, the words flat and devoid of inflection.
