The apartment felt too quiet, the silence pressing in on her ears. She flipped through channels on the television, stopping briefly on each before moving on, a frantic search for something, anything, to distract her. The eviction notice, propped up against a picture frame on the mantelpiece, seemed to mock her with its permanence. Her gaze wandered, tracing the cracks in the plaster, the peeling wallpaper, the imperfections that she usually didn't notice. It all seemed to amplify her state, the weight of a situation she couldn't yet process.
