He picked at the loose threads on the couch, watching the bits of fabric fall to the floor. The eviction notice, a hateful letter, was taped to the refrigerator. He needed to do something, anything, but the simple tasks felt impossible. The silence was deafening, broken only by the occasional drip from a leaky faucet.
