The attic air tasted of dust and forgotten things. Elias ran a hand over a chipped porcelain doll, its painted eyes staring blankly at the rafters. He’d come up here looking for something, anything, to break the monotony of a Tuesday afternoon that stretched before him like a desert. He sifted through a trunk, unearthing moth-eaten shawls and yellowed photographs of people he didn't recognize. Then, tucked beneath a stack of his mother’s old college textbooks, he found it: a crisp, cream-colored envelope. The return address was his father's old workplace, a law firm he’d left decades ago.

Curiosity piqued, Elias slid the letter from its tomb. It was a draft, scribbled with a fountain pen in his father’s familiar, yet distant, handwriting. A letter of resignation. The words, so carefully crafted, spoke of frustration and unfulfilled ambition. He read, "I find myself increasingly at odds with the… stagnation." Elias felt a pang of… something… as he read. The letter ended abruptly, unfinished, a testament to a decision made long ago. He wondered what had been so terrible about the job, he understood.
