The clock on the microwave blinked 2:17 PM, a digital taunt in the otherwise still kitchen. Sarah kicked at the floor, the tiles cool beneath her bare feet. The routine of her day had become a tedious loop, each movement pre-ordained and predictable. Everything felt… flat. She wandered over to the refrigerator, opened the door, and stared blankly at the contents. Nothing there seemed appetizing, or even interesting.

Then, she noticed the envelope. It was wedged between a stack of junk mail and a grocery store circular. The return address was unfamiliar, the handwriting hesitant and shaky. It was from an old acquaintance, a woman named Emily, whom she hadn't seen in nearly a decade.

The letter was a confession. Emily admitted to a malicious rumour, a whispered secret that had caused a ripple effect of chaos and heartache throughout Sarah's younger life. As Sarah read the words, a knot tightened in her stomach. It was like a forgotten wound was being reopened, or maybe it was something new, a sensation she couldn't name. A strange, almost physical tension crept through her, making her fingers clench into fists.
