The hum of the fluorescent lights in the grocery store was grating, and the artificial scents felt overwhelming. Michael pushed his cart down the aisles, the routine a tedious exercise in repetition. He stumbled across a listing. 15 Birch Street. His old home. A wave of unexpected emotion washed over him. The pictures showed the house, all renovated and updated. He felt a profound sense of displacement. A new urgency gripped him. It was a need to do something, anything, besides this unending circle.
