The afternoon light, thick and honeyed, smeared across the living room rug. Amelia found herself tracing the same floral pattern with her fingertip, again. She felt a kind of restless energy, a buzzing just under her skin that made her shift in the worn armchair.

She wandered, eventually, into the home office. A faint scent of old paper and dust clung to the air. David, her husband, was meticulous. He’d left the door to the safe slightly ajar. Curiosity, an unwelcome guest, nudged her forward.

Inside, nestled amongst the usual important documents, was a small, unassuming bank statement. The account was in David’s name, and the balance… was substantial. A slow burn of surprise started in her chest, a heat that had nothing to do with the summer afternoon.
