The silence in the house was deafening. Carol sat on the sofa, the remote control resting limp in her hand. The television screen flickered with a pointless game show, but she didn’t see it. Her thoughts danced a dizzying reel. She felt a growing disquietude, a sort of mental paralysis that was increasingly hard to shake.

She decided to tackle the cluttered garage. Amongst the tools and gardening supplies, she found a locked filing cabinet. It belonged to her husband, Robert. After some effort, she found a key in a hidden drawer.

Inside, nestled among old tax returns, was a statement from a private investment firm. The account listed her husband’s name, and a significant sum of money. She felt a sudden chill, as if the garage door had been opened to a winter wind.
