The hum of the refrigerator filled the kitchen. Elena stared at the chipped paint on the wall, the same pattern she’d seen a thousand times. Every morning felt like the last. She opened a cupboard, fishing out a dusty, leather-bound journal. It was her father’s, and she'd been putting off going through it.

She had to remind herself to start, and so, she opened the first page. *Ride a motorcycle across Route 66.* Item two: *Learn to bake a perfect croissant.* Elena's jaw clenched. Her father, the reserved accountant, had these dreams.

Elena stared at the list. Then, she stared at her boring job. She felt a vague and unsettled feeling. That evening, she purchased a motorcycle and the required lessons.
