Gemotions

The sterile white walls of the staff room seemed to close in on Mrs. Chen. She sipped her lukewarm coffee, the taste doing nothing to awaken her. Her mind, a landscape of routine tasks and repetitive instructions, felt flat and monotonous. She felt a peculiar, bone-deep apathy towards everything around her.

She stared out the window, her gaze fixated on a distant bird in flight, envious of its freedom. The prospect of grading another batch of papers filled her with a profound sense of inertia.

A student from the photography club had stopped by. He had a large print. "Ms. Chen," he started, "You always told us the importance of perspective." The photograph depicted a vibrant street scene, filled with life and movement. He'd captured a sense of place. The photo itself, filled with life, seemed to reinvigorate her own.
