He stared at the spreadsheet, his eyes glazing over the columns of numbers. He ran a hand through his hair, a nervous gesture he hadn't noticed he'd adopted. The fluorescent lights of the office hummed, a monotonous soundtrack to his day. A chime sounded, and a young woman from reception arrived, bearing a cascade of roses. No name, no message. Just beautiful, fragrant blooms. A fleeting spark of interest ignited within him, quickly smothered by the usual, heavy feeling. He returned to the spreadsheet, the numbers blurring once more.
