"Ugh," Clara muttered, pushing away her half-eaten lunch. Another grey afternoon stretched before her. She had nothing to do. The silence in the house was almost deafening. She walked around the living room and sighed. She went to the back garden.

She began to pace, her footsteps echoing in the quiet. Then, almost by accident, she stubbed her toe on something hard. She looked down. A metal container lay half-buried in the soil. She knelt, brushing away the dirt. Inside the container, she found a collection of letters, tied with a faded ribbon. She opened one. Each was written in her own hand, but the words felt foreign, like a secret from a forgotten life.
