The old, worn armchair cradled her form, the fabric bearing the imprint of countless hours spent in quiet contemplation. Now, though, the quiet felt suffocating. The silence was a presence, thick and heavy. A constant companion.

She saw the building announcement posted in the elevator, informing of the upcoming changes. Another wave of disinterest washed over her. It had been like this for weeks. She'd let her life slide. She couldn't remember the last time she'd felt anything.

She reached for the book on the side table, opened it, and read a few lines. Her eyes wandered from the page. The words blurred. She closed the book and set it aside, defeated. The apartment felt smaller, the walls closing in.
