The first nail gun shot ripped through the morning quiet, severing the last tendrils of sleep. Daniel slammed his fist against the mattress, the frustration a coiled spring inside him. He hadn’t slept well in weeks, the anxieties always buzzing just beneath the surface. Now, this. He swung his legs over the side of the bed, the cold floorboards a shock against his bare feet. He was already tired, before the day had even begun.

He moved mechanically through his morning routine, the silence of the house a stark contrast to the onslaught that was sure to follow. The coffee tasted bitter, a reflection of the mood that clung to him like a shroud. He stared out the window, watching the workers begin to unload materials, the sun a pale and indifferent witness to his mounting irritation.

He grabbed his keys and slammed the door, the sound echoing in the deserted hallway. The walk to his car was a march, each footfall a deliberate act of defiance. He needed to get away, to find a space where the world's disruptions wouldn't reach him. The thought brought no relief.
