The first thing Sarah noticed was the chainsaw. It was a guttural, snarling sound, tearing through the air. She pressed her hands over her ears, the metallic taste of anxiety filling her mouth. She had been on edge since her promotion was canceled. The renovation was only the latest thing to disrupt her tenuous sense of peace.

She closed all the windows. The barricade was not enough. The noise seeped into every corner of the house, like a persistent infection. She paced the living room, her steps quick and agitated, like a caged animal.

She wanted to scream, to lash out, to break something. Instead, she sat down on the sofa, her body trembling. The world felt overwhelmingly loud, chaotic, and unmanageable.
