The constant flow of delivery trucks, the blare of music from the construction site, the chatter of the workers – it was an assault on his senses. Michael’s jaw clenched. He was trying to work, but concentration eluded him. He felt as if he was being constantly poked, irritated, and destabilized.

He slammed his laptop shut, the abrupt sound echoing in the silent room. He stood up and paced. The floor was now stained with dust. The walls were shaking.

He needed to get away, to find a place of quiet, a place to think. But the idea of leaving the house, of facing the world outside, filled him with a sudden, overwhelming sense of dread.
