The weight of the letter felt heavy in Sarah's hand, almost physical. She stared at it, the pristine white paper mocking her. The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across her bedroom floor, turning the room into a cage of darkness. She felt trapped.

She crumpled the letter in her fist, then smoothed it out, a small, futile act. She imagined the faces of her family, their hopes invested in her. The thought tightened her throat. The scholarship meant everything.

She sank onto her bed, the springs groaning in protest. The ceiling seemed to press down on her, the silence a suffocating blanket. She just wanted to be alone, to disappear.
