"Leave me alone," Leo snapped, his voice rougher than he intended. His roommate, startled, retreated, wisely choosing to give him space. He was curled on his bed, the covers pulled over his head, shielding himself from the world.

The rejection notice, a small rectangle of disappointment, lay on his desk. He refused to look at it. He replayed the scene in his head, a broken record, the reasons why he deserved the money.

His heart pounded in his chest, a frantic rhythm against the quiet of the room. He felt a pressure building, a need to lash out, to break something. He buried his face in his pillow, muffling a frustrated groan.
