Serena avoided eye contact on the train, the rhythmic clatter a soundtrack to her inner turmoil. She'd discovered 'VelvetRain' lived in her neighborhood. They had discussed so much, sharing secrets, dreams. She felt exposed. She should have been more careful.

She pressed her face against the cool window. The city, usually a source of fascination, now felt threatening. Every face she saw could be hers. She felt trapped. The anticipation of being caught out, of being seen, made her stomach churn.

Her phone buzzed. A message from VelvetRain. A picture of a bakery, the one Serena loved. She quickly looked away.
