The photographer gestured for him to join the group for a picture, a request Leo answered with a curt nod. He planted himself on the periphery, his arms crossed, avoiding the convivial buzz that surrounded him. He'd been looking forward to a relaxing evening. He hadn’t been expecting this.

He saw her, and his heart thumped a heavy, irregular rhythm. It was a physical blow, a punch to the gut. He could feel the blood drain from his face. She looked happy, radiant. He didn't deserve to be in the same room.

He found himself slowly backing away, as if trying to physically distance himself from the memories the sight of her resurrected. He retreated to a shadowy corner, watching the scene unfold from a detached vantage point, his gaze locked on her, a captive audience to her happiness.
