The heat of the dance floor seemed to suffocate Henry. He hadn’t danced, not even once. He’d stood on the sidelines, observing the whirl of couples, the carefree laughter, and felt a profound sense of isolation. When he'd realized she was there, he'd pulled further back into himself.

He noticed the way she moved, her familiar grace. He was struck by the intensity of his own anger, that she could still affect him. He didn’t want to be around her.

He kept refilling his glass. His hand shook slightly as he did. He avoided eye contact with everyone, including the couple who was the reason for this gathering. The weight of his loneliness was a palpable thing.
