The wedding felt like a play he’d been forced to attend, each smiling face a performer, the whole scenario utterly artificial. He forced a smile, but it felt wooden, unnatural. He saw her, and the smile faltered.

He found himself wandering through the crowd, unable to settle, the cheerful greetings grating on his ears. He was desperate for an escape, for a chance to disappear. He clutched his drink tightly.

He ended up outside, leaning against a tree, watching the stars. The cool night air offered a small respite from the suffocating atmosphere of the reception. He just wanted it to be over.
