The shadows in the apartment seemed to lengthen, mirroring his mood. He stood in the hallway, listening. He had heard her voice from the spare room, a murmur he didn't recognize. The door was slightly ajar.

He clenched and unclenched his fists, trying to dispel the prickling sensation on his skin. He felt a surge of heat, followed by a chill. The silence after the call felt more profound.

He walked into the kitchen, reaching for a glass of water, although he wasn’t thirsty. The water tasted metallic. He leaned against the counter, the cool surface a small comfort against the heat in his chest.
