The vibrant colors of the living room seemed faded, the laughter from the television distant. He walked from window to window, tracing the line of the sill with his finger.

He remembered her face, lit by the phone's glow. She'd been in the garden, speaking in soft, hurried tones. He felt a shiver, a sensation that had nothing to do with the outside chill.

He reached for his coat, not knowing where he was going. He just needed to move, to escape the suffocating weight in the air. He slammed the door behind him.
