The coffee shop was too loud, too bright, too full of chattering people. He’d come here, hoping to find some distraction, some way to escape the constant hum of resentment that filled his head. He slumped into a booth, his shoulders hunched.

He barely touched his coffee. He watched the world outside through the window, the movement of the pedestrians, the passing of other cars. Each one, a vivid reminder of the empty space in his driveway. His meal came, the taste of the food was lost on him.
