He went back inside, slamming the door behind him. The sound reverberated through the empty house. He paced the living room, his steps heavy and deliberate. He picked up a framed photograph and studied it, his face unreadable.

He put the picture back down, his movements sharp and precise. He felt a growing sense of isolation, a deep and suffocating aloneness. He went into the kitchen and poured himself a whiskey, the amber liquid glinting in the dim light. He took a long, slow sip, the silence amplifying the simmering turmoil within him.
