He stared at the pile of essays. Adrian felt like a prisoner in his own home. He’d been trapped in this place, chained to this revelation, all morning. The house, usually a sanctuary, felt like a cage.

He picked up a history paper, graded with a red "C." The teacher's comments, now decades old, still stung. He wanted to throw the whole lot out the window.

He felt a familiar pressure building behind his eyes. He rose and began to pace, the rhythm of his steps mirroring the erratic thrumming in his ears. He couldn't seem to stop.
