“It’s a mistake, nothing more,” the doctor repeated. But for Michael, it was everything. The wrong results, a diagnosis that wasn’t his, had cracked something inside him. He felt as though he was on a tightrope, and the wind had suddenly picked up. He took a nervous drag of his cigarette. The smoke did nothing to ease the pressure in his chest.

He clenched his jaw, staring at the doctor as if the man was a snake. He didn't want to be told to be calm. He didn't want to be told it was going to be alright. He just wanted to scream.

He stubbed out the cigarette, the harsh finality of the act a small comfort. He stood up abruptly.
