He stared at his reflection, the face unfamiliar and tight. John’s jaw was clenched. He'd seen the article, the publication under someone else's name, and now he felt a cold hollowness spread through his veins. He looked away from the mirror, unable to bear the sight.

He ran a hand through his hair, mussing it until it stood on end. He felt disconnected, like an actor forced to watch someone else play his part. The injustice of it all twisted in his gut.

He slowly walked to the kitchen, seeking a distraction. He poured himself a glass of water, but his hand shook so violently that the water spilled. He barely noticed. The silence in the apartment seemed to amplify the internal turmoil, the heavy weight in his chest. He felt as if he were underwater, struggling for air.

He knew he couldn't stay here, not like this.
