The locker room felt like a tomb. Sweat still clung to Leo’s skin, a cold, clammy reminder of the tryouts he’d just flubbed. He'd poured everything into this – the grueling training, the strict diet, the endless hours of practice. Now, the coach's words echoed in his ears: "We're going with a different direction." He slammed his locker shut, the metallic clang a jarring punctuation mark to the disappointment.

He didn't speak to anyone, just gathered his things in a methodical, almost robotic way. Each movement was deliberate, slow. His vision seemed to tunnel, the vibrant chaos of the room fading to a dull ache at the edges. He avoided eye contact, the cheerful banter of the other athletes cutting into him like a rusty blade.

Outside, the late afternoon sun cast long shadows, painting the world in stark relief. He shoved his hands deep into his pockets and kicked a pebble down the sidewalk, watching it skip along the concrete until it disappeared into the grass. The weight in his chest felt immense.
