The weight of the unopened email felt immense in Daniel’s inbox. Another message from Mark. He had to be at his desk, at least one arm resting on the table. The fluorescent lights hummed, a monotonous drone that amplified the tension in the room. He could practically feel the cold, disapproving gaze of Mark following him, even now, across the digital divide.

He hadn’t spoken to Mark in ten years, not since... well, not since the last time he’d seen that smirk. He ran a hand through his hair, tugging at the strands. He needed to get through the day, just get through it. He had a meeting at 2:00.
