The message was curt, impersonal. The surprise party, orchestrated with love and meticulous planning, had been cancelled. The decision left him feeling like a deflated balloon. The air seemed to have been sucked out of the room. He sank into his favorite armchair, the comfortable fabric now offering no solace.

He closed his eyes, replaying the scenario in his mind, searching for an explanation, a reason. Finding none, he felt his jaw clench, a silent testament to the frustration bubbling inside.

The clock ticked loudly, each second a hammer blow against his fragile composure. He got up and began pacing, the carpet yielding to his restless steps. The house felt too small, too confining.
