The silence of his apartment felt suffocating, broken only by the rhythmic ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway. Sarah paced, the polished wood floor reflecting the harsh glare of the overhead light. She felt like a caged animal, restless and irritable.

She’d spent the entire afternoon poring over her expenses, meticulously comparing them to the lavish lifestyle of the junior colleague. The disparity was stark, a blatant illustration of the inequity that fueled her growing ire. She knew she was being unreasonable, that she shouldn’t be so upset, but the feeling of being overlooked, undervalued, was potent.
