Rain lashed against the attic window as Sarah climbed the rickety stairs. Each creak underfoot grated on her nerves, mirroring the tension tightening in her shoulders. The air was thick with the scent of decay, a musty perfume she couldn't escape. The attic, usually a forgotten space, suddenly felt like a physical embodiment of her own stagnant feelings.

She found a child's toy chest, its painted surface chipped and faded. Reaching out, she traced the outline of a smiling cartoon character with her fingertips. He felt the phantom weight of a past she wasn't part of.

A moth fluttered past her face, making her flinch. She hated this feeling, this sense of being trapped. She lifted the lid of the chest. Inside, a collection of well-worn storybooks and a single, deflated balloon sat. She wanted to scream. She slammed the lid shut again, the sound echoing through the cavernous room.
