The vibrant colors of the living room felt jarring against his internal landscape. He preferred the muted tones of the shadows, the quiet whispers of the night. He stood by the window, watching the rain streak down the glass, a constant reminder of the storm within him.

He was avoiding unpacking. He was avoiding everything. A creak from the back. He wandered in, and his hand brushed against something odd. It was an out-of-place part of the wall, which was slightly recessed. He pushed on it with little effort, and a secret door opened, revealing a flight of stone stairs leading down into the earth. His gut churned with a mixture of dread and morbid curiosity.
