Gemotions

The salt-laced wind whipped around him, stinging his cheeks. He stood on the pier, the rhythmic crashing of waves against the pilings a steady, relentless beat. He preferred the raw, untamed nature of the coast tonight. The crashing waves helped to drown out the internal noise. He'd poured his heart out, thinking he was getting somewhere. Now, nothing.

He wasn't surprised when he saw her exit the restaurant with another man. It was like a movie. He watched as they embraced, a perfect tableau of everything he’d thought he’d shared. He felt the familiar weight in his chest, a deep ache that settled into the bone.

He turned away, the wind tearing at his coat. He couldn’t face it. He walked away from the place where he should have been.
