Rain lashed against the bookstore window, mirroring the tempest inside Amelia. She ran a hand through her tangled hair, the movement jerky and impatient. Another Tuesday, another failed attempt at feeling… something. She plucked a worn copy of “Wuthering Heights” from the shelf, its spine cracked and the pages yellowed. A refuge, she hoped. A distraction.

As she settled into a dusty armchair, the scent of old paper and something else, something metallic, filled her nostrils. She flipped through the book, her fingers tracing the words without truly seeing them. Then, a folded piece of paper fluttered out. Her heart, for a moment, did a strange dance.

The letter was penned in elegant script. "If you are reading this, I am gone." A chill, deeper than the damp air, crept up Amelia's spine. The words seemed to echo the hollowness she felt, a sentiment so raw it nearly choked her.
