The old rocking chair creaked rhythmically on the porch, a mournful sound that echoed the turmoil within him. The humid Louisiana air clung to him, heavy and oppressive. He gripped the arms of the chair, knuckles white.

His sister’s insistence on selling the antique quilt, stitched by their great-grandmother, felt like a personal betrayal. Each square held a memory, a story whispered in the intricate patterns. Now, it would be gone.

He watched the sunset bleed across the horizon, a fiery spectacle that did nothing to soothe the hollowness inside. A sigh escaped him, a sound swallowed by the approaching dusk.
