The world felt muted. The vibrant city outside his window had lost its luster, reduced to a gray, echoing shell. He'd been staring out at it for hours, the same dull ache settling in his chest. A knock on the door startled him. He’d barely moved from the chair. He looked through the door's eye-hole. A delivery driver, holding a small package. He recognized the address label: the name of the woman who lived here before, someone he'd never met. He took the package, then closed the door, the click of the lock a small, unsatisfying punctuation mark to his mood. He dropped the box on the counter, where it landed with a dull thud.
