He’d been trying to read, but the words swam before his eyes. He slammed the book shut, the sound echoing in the otherwise empty apartment. He paced the length of the living room, feeling the tension coiled in his muscles. Another knock. He yanked open the door. A package. "For Mrs. Abernathy," the delivery person said, offering a pen. He signed with a flourish, not even bothering to look up. Inside the package, he imagined, was something trivial. A reminder of a life that wasn’t his, a life he had never lived, and never would. He closed the door, leaving it where it was.
