"Just go," his mother had pleaded on the phone, her voice thick with emotion. "Don't put yourself through this." But here he was. He found himself driving in circles, stalling and avoiding his destination.

When he finally pulled up, the sight of the bulldozers already at work sent a jolt of anger through him. He felt it surge, a hot, unwelcome current. He clenched his fists, knuckles white, as the machines relentlessly tore at the familiar façade.

He’d almost forgotten how to breathe. He wanted to scream, to lash out, to stop this senseless destruction. Instead, he just stood there, the only sound the deafening crunch of wood and brick.
