He walked slowly, the gravel crunching beneath his feet. The place seemed smaller than he remembered, less grand. Yet, it still stirred up all that he tried to bury long ago.

He stood by the empty foundation. The house was gone, but the memories weren’t, and that was something he hadn't prepared for. He had envisioned freedom. Instead, a phantom weight settled on his shoulders. He reached out and brushed against an exposed pipe, a cold, hard reminder of the future he had yet to face.
