He stared at the email again. The words, so concise, so official, felt like a punch to the gut. “Due to unforeseen circumstances…” The “unforeseen circumstances” were that his scholarship, the one he’d poured all his energy into securing, was to be revoked. It was all a mistake.

His jaw clenched. He pushed away from his desk, the chair screeching. The room, usually a haven, felt cramped, suffocating. He paced, the worn carpet offering no comfort.

He picked up a pen and snapped it. He had sacrificed so much. Every late night study session, every skipped social event. All for this. Now, what? The thought, a raw, burning ember, gnawed at him.
