Eliza slammed the front door, the sound echoing through the empty apartment. Her phone buzzed in her pocket, a reminder of the endless group chat, the constant stream of updates about Chloe’s party. Today was her birthday, too, but Chloe, her roommate, had meticulously planned a themed extravaganza – "Hollywood Glamour," apparently. Eliza, on the other hand, had opted for a small gathering at a local bookstore cafe.

She dropped her bag on the floor, the thud a small act of defiance. The air felt thick, heavy with unspoken expectations. She kicked off her shoes, her toes curling inward with a frustration she couldn’t name. The images of Chloe in a sequined dress and the flashing lights of the rented venue flickered in her mind.

A knot tightened in her stomach. She pictured the forced laughter, the shallow conversations, the feeling of being utterly invisible amidst the orchestrated chaos. She picked up a book from the coffee table, a worn copy of her favorite novel, and flipped it open, seeking solace in the familiar words. Tonight, she’d be surrounded by people, yet utterly alone.
