The coffee cup felt heavy in his hands, a weight matching the gravity in his stomach. He’d come to this little cafe every morning for years, finding solace in the routine. Until today. The soft, jazzy version of his song spilled from the speakers, a saccharine rendition that stripped away the song's soul. He took a long, slow sip, the bitterness of the coffee doing little to cut through the acrid taste in his mouth.
