The sudden darkness had thrown a blanket over everything, not just the physical world but his mood as well. Michael stared up at the ceiling, trying to ignore the way his shoulders were stiffening. He let out a curt laugh. “Just my luck,” he said, his voice clipped.

He rubbed a hand across his face, trying to scrub away the weariness etched there. He was exhausted. He had a million things on his mind, from the missed promotions to his messy personal life.

The lack of movement grated on him. He felt trapped, not just in the metal box, but in a cage of his own making. He knew he was being difficult. He just couldn't shake the bitterness that had been simmering for months.
