"So, what do you think?" said his friend. "It's a good school. You'll be fine." James just shrugged. He didn't feel fine. Not at all. He stared out the window, watching the rain streak the glass. Professor Ellis, his mentor, had accepted a position elsewhere. He could scarcely believe the news. He’d invested so much, built so many plans, on the presumption of a steady hand at the helm.

He swirled the lukewarm coffee in his mug, the motion aimless, a physical manifestation of his internal restlessness. He knew the university had other professors. But it wasn't the same. It wouldn't be the same. The thought sent a fresh wave of something akin to despair washing over him. The world was suddenly a much less certain place.
