He slammed the textbook shut, the sound sharp in the quiet room. The announcement hung in the air, a dark cloud. Professor Tanaka was leaving, abandoning them all. He stood up, pacing back and forth across the small space. His jaw clenched. He felt a potent mixture of anger and betrayal.

He wanted to smash something. He settled for kicking a discarded soda can across the floor. He needed to vent, to release the pent-up tension that was coursing through his veins. He felt as though someone had pulled the rug out from under him. The future, once clear, now seemed murky and uncertain.
