Gemotions

He hunched over his computer, the glow of the screen the only light in the dim office. He worked in the dark, preferring the isolation. His thoughts were a tangled knot.

"Did you ever go to Camp Goldenrod?" asked a voice, breaking the silence. It was Carol.

He froze, his fingers still on the keyboard, his knuckles white. The question was a physical blow, a sudden disruption of his carefully controlled environment.

He swallowed hard. "Yes."

He felt a sudden, sharp pain in his chest, a sensation he had grown used to. He kept his back to Carol, unwilling to face the inevitable.
