Rain lashed against the windowpane, mirroring the tempest within her. The letter was clutched in her hand, the paper softened with age and her own nervous grip. Her mother's handwriting, usually so neat and precise, was frantic here. It was a resignation. From the law firm. From her career. And it had never been mentioned.

She slammed the document on the kitchen counter, the sound echoing in the empty house. The house was too quiet. Too empty. She poured herself a glass of wine, swilling the liquid around, watching the droplets cling to the glass. She felt a profound sense of… something. Unease? Discomfort? A deep, persistent ache that settled in her stomach.
